Confident Parenting
facilitator: Leona Doerksen Room 304
Be the Parent Your Family Needs: If we are truly honest, most of us don’t really know what we’re doing as parents. We have good intentions, but daily frustrations and ongoing struggles might be evidence that we were better prepared to drive a car or pursue our career than raise children. To counter the usual trial-and-error method of parenting, in his book, Confident Parenting, Jim Burns offers time-tested advice and strategies for today’s busy families. Infused with his signature candidness and practicality, each chapter explores a different aspect of parenting from breaking generational chains of dysfunction and creating a warm atmosphere at home to handling discipline issues and blessing your children with a legacy of faith. Helpful follow-up exercises and questions along the way reinforce the basics of good parenting and provide a foundation for developing your own family plan. You won’t find any quick fixes here, but you will learn how to make a positive difference in your family. (Description from the book)

Beyond Biblicism – A Book Discussion
facilitator: Dennis Hiebert Room 302
Christians accept the Bible as authoritative, but what that means, or how that is to be taken, is not always clear. The first article of the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada’s seven-article statement of faith states that “The Holy Scriptures, as originally given by God, are divinely inspired, infallible, entirely trustworthy, and constitute the only supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct.” Yet when Christians read the Bible, they appeal to it, interpret it, and apply it in remarkably, sometimes contradictory ways. In The Bible Made Impossible: Why Biblicism is Not a Truly Evangelical Reading of Scripture (Brazos Press, 2011), Christian Smith first critiques the assumptions, beliefs, and practices of the approach common among evangelicals. He then offers a constructive alternative approach that is a more honest and faithful reading of the Bible. Far from challenging the inspiration and authority of Scripture, Smith critiques a particular rendering of it, encouraging evangelicals to seek a more responsible, coherent, and defensible approach to biblical authority.
The class format will be a book club style open discussion, in which class participants read the same chapter of Smith’s book each week and then come together to discuss it on Sunday morning. from the church office . Anyone is welcome to join any or all of the discussions. Full schedule available in class.
The book can be purchased from standard book sources, or from the Info Centre or in class for $15 .
Young Adults

This I Know. Whether in sports or in your career, excelling never occurs without a solid grasp of the basics. Through April, we’ll re-examine the truth about Jesus: his purposeful death, his verified resurrection, his presence with believers today, his work through the Church, and his promised return. Excell in your faith walk by solidifying the basics.
Leaving Your Mark in This World. How do we gain influence with others? Not by mastering information, but by demonstrating reliability and insight in real-life situations. Your life can make a difference … among your family, your friends, even across other cultures. In May, we’ll be challenged and encouraged from the lives of men and women of influence.
Block 2 11:00am – noon
Foundations for Faith (April)
A Lasting Legacy (May)
Room 302
Foundations: Many adults rarely think about their faith between “religious” events. Adults sometimes allow life’s routines and challenges to distract them and fail to catch the significance of their faith for daily living. Some would only be able to give “Sunday School answers” regarding the foundations of their faith.
Legacy: As adult believers, we can have an impact on younger generations that outlasts our days on earth. Solomon wrote, “A good man leaves an inheritance to his grandchildren” (Prov. 13:22). The inheritance that matters most, however, is not the money, property, or possessions we hand down to our children. Of greater significance is a godly legacy of authentic Christian faith that will impact them and others for eternity. What’s the state of legacy you’re leaving?
